ORIGIN OF OTHELLO

Popular board games have been a part of our lives since childhood. As youngsters and adults, people prefer playing board games with friends, families and at several occasions. A few popular board games are scrabble, Chess, Game of Life and Monopoly. Among these is a game called Othello, which is a top favorite among all ages.

Othello is more popularly known as Reversi. In fact Othello was the trade name of the game. It has been a popular board game since the year 1883. It dates back to the time when it gained immense popularity in England. As the name suggests and sounds very familiar, it is indeed an inspiration from Shakespeare’s play, Othello. The game that is played today, is a modern set which is different from the earlier version. It contains totally new rules which have ofcourse been adapted from the old version and is accepted all over the world. There have been many kinds of assumptions that have been made due to the game name being Othello. Considering the fact that jealousy was the central theme of the play, this board game also to a certain extent represents the mindset with the black and white chips that have to be taken into possession.

Othello is played by two players on a board that stretches across eight columns and eights rows. The pieces that one plays with are a circular shaped thin disks that are either white in color or have a darker shade. These disks are moved across the board as one tries to capture as many disks and finishes the game for the opponent.

Over the years this game has been introduced across the world gradually. After its discovery in the year 1883, it moved to Germany in the year 1898. By 1975, when the modern rules applied, it was introduced in America and other places.
