Othello Rules

OTHELLO RULES

Reversi was the original game, however as the game evolved into a more modern concept, along with the name, certain rules also changed. The game commences with four markers that are placed centrally on the board. The disks in the game have a darker side and the lighter side, to each one of them. Among these four markers, two are placed on the lighter side while the other two rest on the darker side. In total there are sixty-four squares on the board. One person chooses the lighter side while the other dominates the dark side. The aim of the game is to flip your opponent’s disks into the side that favors you or the one that you chose initially.

Among the players it is decided as to who goes first. After this the players start forming their rows with their colored sides. Each player must make his row and try to avoid the other player obstructing his row with another side. For instance if player A has chosen the light side and player B has chosen he dark side, they will begin to play. While player A has formed his row of light sides by placing the disks appropriately, player B will try and place the dark sided disk on the row and outflank the row, in order to turn every disk into the darker side. Basically, the opponent will try and outflank the rows created by one player.

Here, by a row, the rules of the game mean that a row can be one disk or a number of disks in a straight line. By simply placing a disk of different side in front of the row can be availed as a rule to flip the side of those disks in the row. Also, a disk may be outflanked in any direction ranging from horizontal, diagonal, vertical, forward or backward. These flips result only with a move. The game comes to a halt when the board is full of disks. The number of sides, light and dark are counted separately and clearly the maximum number wins.

There are a number of theories on winning the game as well. To win by 2 to 10 disks is called a close game while 12 to 24 is a hot game. 26 to 38 is a fight game. 40 to 52 is a walkaway game and finally 54 to 64 disks is a perfect game.
