Football and Fighting - Great combination for a new Board Game

Brent Evenger is a games designer and has recently setup a new venture, 'a game publishing company by the name - Interaction point game. It is located in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. The company launched two card games: 'Knock down, drag out & Third and long; in July of 2010.

The first ever game - Third and Long - is a card game that simulates American football. The game is ruled out on the key moments that take place during a football game. So, instead of tracking downs and distance covered the card game relies on the key plays of scoring drives. Those among the players who can mange to score the key plays win the game. With this card game, the entire team is represented by few of the individual players. Just like every other games, the game play of this game is more also similar. Herein, both the offense and the defense draws out a card to reveal what the other team is doing, during the game. The game is time bonded; so after the clock and the deck runs out, it declares an end of one quarter. The final win is declared after finishing four quarters.

The other game that was released - Knock Down, Drag Out - is a different game altogether, in terms of play! It's based on the Wild West saloon fighting, wherein the sole aim is to beat other players and be the last man standing. The card game starts off with each player getting three cards, to play. Every player gets a chance to draw a card from the stack and roll a dice. This is done in a clock wise manner and each player receives his turn, sequentially. In this manner the player who scores the most points wins the game.

Expected value and house drop in online gambling

Expected value is everything in gambling as well as in online poker. In order to be a successful gambler or even just to understand how you should gauge your expectations, you need to know the exact payout rates your online casino offers on various games. These payout rates should be featured on the casino's website somewhere, and they have to be provided by an independent auditing entity which assumes full responsibility for the numbers posted. The authority issuing the payback % sheet should be a well-known one and the license it provides for the casino should be available as well. If the payout percentages or the license are missing, that could be a sign that the auditor has pretty much broken ties with the casino which it no longer endorses.

Let's get back to the payout percentages and to their significance though. Because it's casino gambling we?re talking about, the payout percentages will always be under 100% (with rare and special exceptions). This means that under normal circumstances, if you were to play on forever, you'd end up with a sure loss. Due to the variance though, you may well walk away a short term winner. The payout percentages displayed on the casino?s website will pretty much give you the house edge used on different games too. If a game is advertised to give you back 99 cents on the dollar, then the house edge featured on it is 1%. Mind you that the house edges featured on online casino games are usually smaller than those featured by most land based casinos. Online casinos are easier to maintain and to expand, and they cost much less too, so they can afford to give up some of their profits for the sake of attracting more players.

Is it really the house edge that hurts your online gambling bankroll in the long-run though? With such 1-5% house edges, it can?t really do any meaningful damage can it? Well, actually it can. You see, the house edge is not the player's no. 1 enemy at the casino, rather, it's the house drop. The house edge only serves to induce the house drop, which will go on to tax players to a much more 'generous' degree. Here's a small math experiment to show you how the house drop works: Suppose you walk into a casino with $10 looking to place 10 $1 bets on a game which features a 5% house edge. That means, on every single bet, you'll get back 95 cents on your dollar. If you lose 10 times 5 cents, you'll end up with a 50 cent loss at the end of your 10 bets. That means you'll have $9.5 in your account at the and of your 10 bet spree (theoretically of course, because for the sake of simpler math, I decided to ignore variance completely). After 10 bets, you've lost exactly 5% of your roll. You get caught up in the heat of the excitement though, and decide to play on. After 9 more bets, you end up with a 9x0.05=$0.45 loss. After 19 bets, that leaves you with a $0.50+$0.45 loss, which is $0.95. That represents 9.5% of your initial bankroll, much more than the 5% advertised house edge. This is the house drop. The longer you play, the bigger the house drop becomes, and if you play long enough to lose all your money, the house drop hits 100%. Now that you know how the house edge works to induce the house drop, you will hopefully look at the displayed payout rates with a different sort of understanding.

Break Out the Camera for Cocktail's Photo Party - Eric Martin.

This is one of the most fun and unique game that we have seen by far. Cocktail Games - A French publisher has released the insanity filled idea turned into a playable game. No one can be any sure of what they might get to see in the games little square tins! It is just too much impossible. Only thing that is for sure is that it will embarrass those who will be playing it to no limit.

In the month of July 2010 the publishers are set to release Photo Party; a game! The game is playable among 6 to a max. Of 15 players at a time, of age group of 8yrs and above. The camera that should be used while playing the game is not included along with the set, so players need to have their own while setting up the game. A camera with a self timer is recommended for adding more to the fun. Among the many players, one player will be the photographer and that player will select a dozen of the challenge cards according to the games location and the players.

The task is simple! The players, every one of them must be at their goofy mood. That is throughout the game they have to perform various crazy activities while getting captured. Once all the photos are taken they are reviewed and those of the players captured performing the particular task scores a point. This way those who get most number of challenges will score more points and the person with most number of scores is the winner.

New card game on the block.

Everyone knows that being last is synonymous with being lost! But this adage is somehow contradicted at the game of Tim Mierzejewski's Malta! The newest game all set to be launched in September 2010 offers a unique twist for board game lovers. For an age group of 8+ and playable among 2-6 players, the player who survives (or holds on) to the very last is the declared as a winner.

Malta is a card based game, wherein there is a row of seven different starting discs. Each disk is marked as '1' and a single pointing arrow that points towards the other randomly placed discs. Initially, the first player to resume the game starts off by as many, number of cards depicted by the starting disc. After playing half of the secured number of cards the player proceeds by moving the token one place in the direction of the arrow. These cards allow for rotation of disc's, facilitate or allows for stealing of cards (!), zero out disc and even gain extra cards. Just as in monopoly, if the player happens to land a card on the opponent's token, he/she has to pay card tax equivalent to the number representing that space. So be very aware and let the others land on you space, for a change. And do prepare to laugh with an evil grin on your face, when they do so!

Pictionary

The adverts for board games always try to be at their best possible creative self. The new ad for Pictionary is out and out hilarious and truly restores what the classic board game is all about. 'Fun and imagination'! The game of pictionary is all about drawing characters. In this ad, a grandfather is depicted, who uses his grey celled imagination to carve out his version of miss universe, 'a blonde haired, big chested girl in a pink dress. He happily stands next to his blonde creation with a mischievous grin to his face. Pictionary is for everyone, not matter the age and the ad truly defines it with use of some hilariously impressive characters. It also shows how the classic board game can be made to be a lot of fun with a little of creative imagination.

World chess championship.

Yet another remarkable achievement for the world chess prodigy, Mr. Viswanathan Anand, as he secured his glorious crown by winning the world chess championship by defeating Veselin Topalov from Russia. It was a glorious win. The final game was played with black, as at the end of the 12th game, Anand achieved a win with a margin of 6.5-5.5.

Most of the experts believed that the game would be ended, with Topalov managing to aim for a tie, which would have been ended in a rapid tie breaker round. But with Topalov at his worst, played some panicked moves, in the process messed up with the final game. Meanwhile Anand kept on with his pace and played some brilliant moves, complicating the moves further for the Russian GM. This is his fourth world champion title in 11 years and he still is the king at the game in the world of chess.

He is the only champion in the world to have won back to back 'world championship matches' against different opponents. In 2008 he won the match against Vladimir Kramnik. During the year 2006 he managed to win ahead of all the top world players and in 2000, the championship was won, by him, when the outcome was decided on a knockout basis. Viswanathan Anand in his on going career have had played and won against every world ranking player in chess.

Anand is regarded as the best player in rapid chess. In the final game this fact worked in his favor as Topalov hurried his moves, just so as to avoid any tie breaker round against the GM. He knew he won't be able to secure any win in that round. At the 40 move Anand philandered while making a wrong move, but with a commanding position, the wrongly played move didn't mattered that much!

Capital fundraiser through a game of monopoly.

Ottawa valley played host to one of the largest monopoly tournament ever held. At the Pembroke Armouries, College-Opoly was conducted, in which eight teams competed. Not only did they compete for winning the monopoly tournament, the winner of the game was awarded a chance to compete against the best player in Canada; Mr. Will Lusby himself!

This College-Opoly tournament was very much a major step for Algonquin College to raise money for building a new downtown campus. They raised as much as $65,000 at the Saturday night monopoly tournament.

It was last year that Mr Lusby of Ottawa was crowned as the Canadian Monopoly king. He acquired the glorious title by defeating 47 of the best monopoly playing champions, at the tournament. At this years tournament, Mr. Lusby found himself saying that he might be excepting some tough competition for among the College-Opoly. Nonetheless, he will be holding the championship title for the coming four years or so.

The tournament game began with a marquee match at around 5 pm, wherein the players were introduced to the basic rules and strategies, those that are adhered while playing at the tournament. The need for explaining is due to the fact that, the monopoly game played at such competitions differs from the game that is played casually, with friends and family. Here (during competing events) the players make use of three dices for playing instead of the usual two. Then there is the facility of property auctioning of houses and hotels. Also, unlike the normal casual game play, no player gets to collect any money on landing in 'free parking' space on the game board.

The fee for participating in the College-Opoly tournament was $5000 for a team of four players. Including the eight teams that played at this tournament an amount of $40,000 was instantly raised from the fees alone. Rotary club of Pembroke added a helping aid by committing to donate a sum of $25,000 to the project over the period of next five years. Mr.John Escott, the president of the rotary club was happy with the addition of Renaissance Square to that area and specifically to the school's overall development that might get a boost from its sheer presence.

The new campus will be situated at the Pembroke downtown waterfront, construction work for which is scheduled for during in the spring of 2011. As per the schedule, if everything falls into place, the facility will be functional by the fall of 2012. Estimated cost is projected to be around $36 million. The college community will help raise $2.5 Million with their community capital campaign.

Algonquin college dean, Karen Davis is overtly happy with the ongoing things, as local business and communities are contributing their share to the Monopoly fundraiser. According to her it's a huge thing as no college or university has ever tried attempting such a feat.

While at the end of the tournament every point was being calculated for each of the players. It was done using the standard Monopoly point system. Those teams with the highest number of points, the three teams choose a representative to compete against Mr. Lusby in a 90 min game play.

During the final match, the Canadian monopoly champion Mr .Lusby was defeated by Marianne Pritchard- Taylor. She was from the rotary club team. Dough Sitland and Peggy Williams were the other two competing finalist.

The top teams were, 'Scotia Bank', which consisted of Peggy Williams, Chantelle Leslie-Leach, Suzanne Thuemen and Stacey Kelly. The Rotary Club of Pembroke that had players like, Marcel Mantha, John Escott, Colonel A. Towriss and Marianne Pritchard-Taylor. The other team called as 'the Engineers', consisted of Fred Blackstein, Doug Sitland, Doug Fee and Base Petawawa commander Lt.-Col. Keith Rudderham.

Ipad board games

One of he most hardest thing ever to be done, is to be able to 'convince your wife to spend a few hundred's on the glitzy Ipad'! But it seems, that is not as hard a thing to do... Well, you can always convince her by mentioning those social cohesive features that Apple's ipad comes blessed with.

It seems, Apple has their way of turning things around. Like in the past, they revolutionized the computer scene by introducing the world to the uber cool Mac's. Later with the introduction of Ipod, it was the music industry that sat up and took notice. The mobile manufacturing industry was literally shaken with the shiny new iphone.

Now as the ipad is here, it too is promising to create a unique niche of its own.

One thing that it now wants substituted with is the board games. Being overly flat and comes loaded heavily with supportive apps, the ipad becomes a neat substitute for playing board games. Currently the apple app store has many classical board game titles on offer. These can be directly downloaded from their store. The large touch screen on the ipad is almost perfect, for being able to play most of the classic games. Scrabble seems to be doing the charts at the Apple's app store and is currently one of the best selling games for the ipad.

Guess, now is the best time to convince your wife, with mention of all the fun features that the ipad has to offer. If everything else fails, try telling her about the pool parties.

15 years of Board game design.

In the early 90's a non-German board game designer winning the 'Game of the year' title in a continuous three year time frame would have been touted as unthinkable. Not any more! With the globalization that is making its presence felt among in the league of board game design, many a great designs are pouring-in from all parts of the world. Most of the brilliance in designing is contributed to world board game from amongst the different parts of Europe. The contemporary designers are losing their sheen and in recent times have inordinately failed to make any significant mark in the board game designing. 'Maybe they fear thinking of new creative ideas. While the new-age breeds of designers are into experimenting with a lot of 'cool' stuff, deliberately bringing forth some of the most new and exciting stuff for the world to see. The year 2006 saw the dominance of non-German designers marking it to the top favored list. Due to this the German dominance over the 'the game of the year' title stalled to a screeching stop in that same year. The questioned that caroused most was, 'which country after Czech and France will make it to the coveted list for the designer title!

It's the same story each passing year. Yes! 2009 is heralded as one of the most strongest and successful year for the board game design. But every event held each year goes on saying that the passed year proved unworthy in terms of quality and brilliance. That is to say, 'it will be resonated with the coming of years. There certainly are great designs making their foray, which to be politically correct, are very least in terms of sheer number, always along with the accompanying bad, mediocre and worst designs. So the extremity in variation seem to fluctuate each year, but none of the year proved bad enough to churn out some really... really worst games. Contradicting this, some years prove very confusing while it comes to choose between the games of the year. Just because each one of them is so good that it becomes a task to make an apt enough choice. One such example of this choice making decision was projected in the year 2005 when Kreta, Twilight Struggle, Caylus, Louis XIV, and Bonaparte all four posed as the games that needed too much lateral thinking in announcing one of them for the game of the year tile. All of them were of that supreme caliber. Distinguishing themselves from the rest are the games that highlighted some of the fabulous years. These games, wining the tile of year shone and weighed far too excellent among the hopelessly shattered nominees. The judges required no second though in choosing them as the final winner. It's been 15years since 1995 that the board gaming world offered some uniquest of designs for the board game enthusiast to enjoy. In 2009 selecting 5 nominees from among the 145 new games is proved as a difficult enough tasks with the new Q1 and Q2 , also the Q3 and Q4 installment of the new series in place. The games that missed the crown did miss it with the slimmest of margin. That does not, by any mean! Make them a bad design.

Update from German Board Game Championship

After the last years success at the German Boardgame championship, The condecentric team expected of a big win at this years championship. Despite the lack of proper training, that every team has to undergo inorder to prepare for such tournament; the team motivated themselves to play at the national tournament for board games, that was to be held this Saturday. The codecentric teams boasts of names like 'Andreas Ebbert-Karroum, Torsten Rodemann, Marc Clemens and Fabian Lange' - the four dominating players, comprising the highly motivated team. They have aptly named it as Codecentric, to infuse terror and dread among the opponent with cool enough gothic sounding name to their championship playing team.

During the gaming championship, each player from the team needed to play one round of each of the five games. The games that tested their skills were Argricola, Stoneage, Dominion and Heckmeck am Bratwurmeck. Each of those five games with their own set of difficulties, test's the skill set and strategy making of every player. The game of Argricola is a strategy game of frivolous complexity. It requires some hard hitting strategies for securing a grudging win over the opponent. Stoneage on other hand is a round based resource gathering game, which from the rules appears simple yet is somehow found hard while actually playing. That too under the immense chaos felt at a championship event. The infamous Dominion is a card based game in which the players compile a custom card deck according the available cards and devise sophisticated strategy. The other game at the championship was Heckmeck am Bratwurmeck, a dice game played with some serious use of probability.

The beginning round at the tournament kicked off with the game of dominion. The game went very well for the team's progress at the national championship. By guarding a first position by two of the team's players and a second place, earned them a progressive start. Only one of the game was lost, all reasoned to the wrongly played strategy. The game of Agricola on the other hand strained the players to an extended limit. It lasted for more than two hours with some pretty intense battle between the codecentric and the opposing team. They tried playing the farmer and the rancher strategy but failed to a second, third and a fourth place. This game threatened to snatch their winning streak.

After a short time interval allotted for a quick snack break, the vengeance in the codecentric style of approach waned into subtlety as they played the game of rolling the dice in Heckmeck am Bratwurmeck. None of the four players are avid gamblers, so three among them settled for a fourth place with one finishing a distant third. With the starvation strategy at work, applied by the codecentric team in the last game of stoneage, it did worked wonders against the losing opponents. It was also helpful in bringing the coveted second, third and a fourth place. One of the victories by the team was done with some more mainstream farming and building strategy.

Horus Heresy - Board Game

Horus Heresy includes six scenarios that differ in both difficulty and style. The first scenario, titled Brother against Brother, is recommended for all new players as it provides predetermined starting locations for both forces controlled by the players. It is a well balanced version of the Battle for Terra, and also presents a roughly historical recreation of the conflict's events.

The board game, 'Horus Heresy' is based on the legendry battle of warhammer, wherein 40000 universes unfolds their fury on the razed plains of terra and in the frozen orbit above. Deadly fighting ranges from the emperors golden inner palace to Horus's flagship, the vengeful spirit.

Players have a varied option over choosing the different armies within the game. It totally depends on each of the two players to either be the traitor or the loyalist. A choice solely thrust ed upon them. They can control fearless Space Marine legions or deviant Chaos Space Marines, mighty Titans, Imperial Armies both loyal and traitorous, and a fearsome array of other units, including the Emperor and Horus themselves.

The game brings to life the legendary tale of treachery and heroism with the use of over one hundred magnificently sculpted plastic playing pieces. The added three-dimensional map of Terra brilliantly portrays the entire landscape immediately surrounding the Imperial Palace. It thoroughly depicts the magma-filled crevasses to the fortifications that offer the Imperial player the much needed protection against both, 'enemy assault and orbital bombardments.

An innovative order to the game and a unique initiative system forces each of the sides to carefully consider the commands they issue for their troops. A dramatic, card-driven combat system incorporates escalating damage onto the enemy, giving players the opportunity to reallocate resources between their attacks and defense. It also brings to bear the unique special powers of each unit type, from fortification-destroying Titans to the perverse daemons of Chaos.

Each one of these structures, as well as the Imperial Palace itself, has been expertly sculpted in this board game. As the whole scene rises above the landscape, it does truly create an awesome immersive experience for the players. The fortifications of Terra did never have looked more formidable! Once the board game is set up with all the playing pieces in place and the terrain, it is actually a wonder to behold if played for the very first time.

Reviving Ancient Indian Boardgames

Not too long ago when granny used to open her bag of colourful cowrie shells, the gathering of screeching children would almost instantly pour all by her side. Back then, childhood was about the lazy afternoons that were spent musing over the tactics, to outdo the scheming cousin by carefully observing granny's experienced hands worked her way with those cowrie shells.

But soon after granny's stories got swapped with video games, and the traditional Indian games faced the fear of getting extinct. Some of these games have its roots within the ancient Indian mythology, Few children today are aware about the delights of Chaupad. A strategic boardgame made famously or rather infamous from an event in the Mahabharata, where the Pandavas not only did lose their kingdom and but also Draupadi [their wife].

To revive a breath of life into these almost forgotten games, a former journalist in Chennai 'Vinita Siddharth' is working around the clock to reinforce the value among the current generation. She also has a toy shop by the name Kreeda, which in Sanskrit means sports. The shop has a wide range of traditional games. Apart from the usual staple of Gilli Dand', marbles and Saanp Seedhi (snakes and ladders), the collection boasts more than 25 games with the heritage status to them. These games are now available at stores like Dhoop and Odyssey in Mumbai.

Kreeda has games from across the country. One such is 'Aadu Puli Attam', a game in which three tigers and 15 goats struggle for their survival. If a tiger encounters a goat, it is killed and if four goats trap a tiger, the tiger is ousted. Then, theirs is the other game that involves simple color-identification. It is called Chinesepiel, which happens to be popular on both sides of the Indo-China border. Kreeda also has a unique game from Karnataka called Kalanay Belanay (meaning Black Elephant, White Elephant) It was actually taught to the Kreeda staff by an elderly person, as the whole staff was anxious to see the games she did played as a child.

In fact, when Kreeda was being set up in 2002, soon after that 'Siddharth started off on an editorial assignment to research about the ancient games. An important part of the ground work involved visits to several of the old age homes to tap into the childhood memories of the aged. "The majority of our sources have been above 60," she says.

The team also did visit tribal areas and were in touch with NGOs to document indigenous games. To add to the experience, they are now also working to document those songs that were traditionally sung while playing these games. "Games are a little known aspect of Indian culture and this aspect has a fun facet too," says Siddharth. "It's somehow so old and yet so new."

For the entrepreneur, the greatest challenge was renaming the games. In most cases, the game been played in different parts of the country was under different names and variations. These games, she says, were traditionally played with things that were readily available around the house. Marbles, shells, sticks, stones, fruits and seeds. That's why some games, like Nungu Vandi, which involves a stick and palm fruit, is available only during summers. That, she says, is the formidable spirit of traditional Indian games. "They were, by and large environment-friendly, and we tried to stick with that as far as possible," she says, adding that they teach us a thing or two about our culture and history and promote interaction between generations. The games are priced reasonably, starting from as little as Rs 40 and going up to Rs 500 for complicated games.

Rise of Empires

"Razor sharp steel and glinting metal warring its fury against the hardened of flesh; ultimately drawing cruelest blood for the sole purpose of 'rise of nations!" Well, all of this set and played on a board game. The recently released strategy board game 'Rise Of Empires' by Mayfair games, created and developed by Martin Wallace.

Rise of Empires is a resource management game that while playing easily stretch's 2-4 hours long. If you're looking for a game with European styling but with a more impressive length and depth, this may well be the perfect game. Although there are a few sharp edges with regard to both the components and the rules, be aware of those while you enjoy the game.

The game starts in the Mediterranean, (like the classic Eurocentric vision of the world) and players can attack and make wars but the territorial expansion has little importance in this game, because your empire is abstract and is made up of territories, cities and scientific research. But players can't seem to loose their entire empires for a military defeat. Take the reins of a developing civilization, while choosing the resources and development paths that will lead to the fastest expansion, as you claim and defend territory on a map forging an empire that eventually encompasses whole continents. The territories have cost and benefits. For example, the plains (represented by cultivated fields) give food, the mountains give resources that can be exchanged for money (or other), and so on. Also the control over the map can give you victory points, resources and money. At each change of age the forces in the field "evaporate" in part, symbolizing the disappearance of the ancient civilizations and the rise of new powers.

In Rise of Empires, the entire play is divided into three eras. Choices made early in the era are repeated late, so your decisions must have both short-term and long-term benefits to be successful. This process requires tough decision-making and promotes an atmosphere with nail-biting suspense. Victory points are rewarded for building cities, in having an empire, for the progress in science and also for trading goods.

Rise of Empires breathes new life into the civilization games genre! Balance gold and food, war and agriculture, territory and technology to forge an empire that is destined to rise above all other nations!

Presenting Zathura, a space adventure (2006) another board game based movie directed by Jon Favreau and distributed by Sony Pictures.

Zathura, a space adventure was a movie that was popular amongst kids and adults and it's based on a novel of Chris Van Allsburg , the author of "Jumanji", another great example of the successful mix of board games and movies. However a lot of people love the movie Zathura, for its story and for the board game design (the game board it's quite interesting).

Classic board games memories

Before the introduction of television and digital media, families used to enjoy playing classic board games where fun and games were condensed into a screen. Today, with our busy life we regret for not having that kind of a moment when families had fun together sitting around a table and playing classic board games.

The board game industry began in the 20th century when the new middle class demanded for family entertainment. The most creative minds of that period quickly designed many games which was became a source of leisure for children and adults. Nowadays some of them are considered like pieces of art. During the Georgian period, for a rare classic board game with illustrations and a good board, were sold for up to 500£.

Despite their old age, Classic board games are still popular and most-liked. Monopoly was launched in 1935 in UK and 200 millions sets were sold since then. Classic board games like monopoly, risk, connect four and many others remain one of the best options for all those who want to enjoy some recreational activity. Parents suggest these games for their kids so that they can be involved in fun as well as a learning activity for their development.

In this sense, classic board games can always keep the family together while playing thus making their relation stronger and creating harmony and fun in the house. For this reason, classic board games are ageless, because they are one of the funniest way to teach children about rules, loyalty, honesty, challenge, logic, problem solving and many other skills.

There are so game and activities to keep us involved in fun and learning. It could be a strategy game , a brain teaser or just a parlour game, the important thing is classic board games can get families around a table and offer an optional way to tackle themselves and learn about life. I think this is indeed significant and worth to play if we do not want to miss the best moments of our life with our family
